During his college days, Charles began his journey by making intricate costumes to compete in his school’s Halloween costume contest. After attending his first convention and discovering the world of cosplay, Charles began pushing his craft to new levels. His love for the characters he takes on, strong eye for detail, and overall creativity, allows for Charles to bring any character to life. We at Omnic Post are honored to introduce you all to Charles Calixto a.k.a Shyaku Cosplay!

The interview

How did you get into cosplaying? How long have you been cosplaying for?

I feel like every other cosplayer has the same origin story: you started making costumes for Halloween, then you go to a convention and see all the people in cosplay, and you wonder why no one told you costumes could be worn 365 days out of the year? For me it really started in college; my school took Halloween very seriously, and the costume contest was always a big deal. After graduating, I took a break for many years while I tried to become a “serious adult.” It wasn’t until I moved to San Francisco and found myself surrounded by like-minded geeks that I jumped back into my old hobby.

Why did you choose to cosplay Butcher Roadhog? What drew you in about the character?

Butcher Roadhog is a combination of two of my favorite games: Overwatch and Diablo! I’ve been cosplaying Roadhog skins since the game came out, but I got super excited when Butcher and the other Blizzard World skins were revealed. Also, in my head canon, Roadhog himself is just cosplaying as Butcher.

What was the biggest struggle when crafting your costume?

Honestly, finding time to finish! I started the mask back in January, but real life and work got in the way. Four months later, and I finally had time to finish him just before Anime Expo of this year.

Do you have any memorable interactions with other cosplayers, fans, voice actors, artists, etc. when you cosplayed your hero?

In 2016, I was wearing OG Roadhog cosplay to my very first Blizzcon. The cosplay contest had just finished, and I was waiting for people to head out before I left. A tall guy with an impressive beard comes up and asks if he could take a pic with me. At this point, I’m exhausted and half-dressed, but I just said “sure” and got back into the whole ‘hog. Just before his girlfriend snaps a pic, he tells me that he’s been getting pics with all the Roadhog cosplayers he could find… because he’s Josh Petersdorf, Roadhog’s voice actor. Needless to say, meeting the boss hog himself made my weekend!

What hero or hero skin would you love to cosplay?

Right now, I’m planning out a cosplay of Hammond/Wrecking Ball in his MayHam skin. But if Jeff Kaplan would give us Roadhog’s speedo skin from the summer games sprays, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

How do you choose which characters to cosplay in general?

First and foremost, I have to like the character! As a big guy, I also gravitate towards other larger-than-life characters that are strong, capable, and not the punch line to some fat joke. I believe anyone can cosplay any character regardless of age, race, or body type as long as you’re respectful and feel confident wearing it.

Who is your favorite Overwatch hero?

I’m a tank main, so give me Roadhog, D.Va, or Reinhardt any day! Still need to get good with Brigitte and Wrecking Ball, but they are both ridiculously fun to play.

Do you have any upcoming costumes planned or currently in the works?

MayHam Wrecking Ball for Blizzcon 2018, because we need more neon junkers in games. (Hammond is a junker, fight me Jeff!)

What do you love most about cosplaying?

Bringing my favorite fictional characters to life, and challenging myself with new techniques and materials with every build.
