Overwatch’s 7 Post-Release Heroes, Ranked
The release of Wrecking Ball last week really got me thinking: it’s pretty crazy that Overwatch is still churning out new heroes for us to play this far into the game. It barely feels like last week that Brigitte was released, yet here we are with hero 28 ready to play–and what a character he is! He’s bizarre in all the best ways and his play style could really change how the game is played moving forward, which is what all the added heroes have tried to do. But which of the new heroes is the best? Let’s find out…
Before I start, I apologize in advance to all of my colleagues here at Omnic Post who have a weird obsession with Orisa. No hard feelings, I promise! Unfortunately, she is in last place on this list. Orisa was the first new tank to be introduced, as she was released on July 27th, 2017, and she is definitely a great character to play. She is a regular amongst the pros in the Overwatch League and has one of the best kits in the game, but she is just a little boring. Maybe it’s because she is an omnic character, but there is just something missing that doesn’t make me warm to her…when was the last time you saw somebody wearing an Orisa t-shirt? Exactly.
This is so hard for me as an Ana main, but realistically she just isn’t all that interesting as a character and is quite tough to play. Ana was the first of the new heroes to be released, dropping onto the scene on July 19th, 2016, and has always struggled to really cement herself as a key support in the game. She is low on this list partly due to the fact that she is incredibly hard to master and that she probably isn’t as popular as some of the more exciting characters in the game, but let’s all agree that hitting a key sleep dart is one of the best feelings in the game.
Moira was released on November 17th, 2017 and has become an incredibly influential character since then. The second support to be introduced, Moira’s ability to do tons of healing and damage has made her a character to be reckoned with, much like Zenyatta. She also has a wicked personality, and it was great to see another villain added to the game after Doomfist smashed his way into the game (more on him later).
On March 20th, 2018 came Brigitte, the third support to be added to the game and the best, in my opinion. I’m actually a massive fan of Brigitte, her kit and her character in general; I think she is a complete character and could be higher up on this list. I just feel that, similar to Orisa, she seems to lack that spark that would put her among the top characters in the game. Personally I think her playstyle is amazing, especially her ability to shut down flanking Genjis and Tracers, and her hopeful, cheery personality fits so well into the Overwatch world Blizzard has built. She just scrapes in above Moira due to her having the cutest ‘hello’ in the game (hey hey).
In third place is everyone’s favorite hacker, Sombra. Released on November 15th, 2016, Sombra came with a dynamite personality and a fantastically unique set of abilities that definitely earn her third place on this list. She’s a nightmare to play against, but I feel that her uniqueness in both how she plays and how nobody knows whose side she is on makes her such a memorable character in a game that has so many great characters.
Smashing in at number two is Doomfist, who was released on July 27th, 2017. One of the key names in the lore of the game since its first-ever reveal, everyone was completely hyped when Doomfist was announced as a hero. Doomfist not being the best playable character doesn’t matter, as he plays such a massive part in the story of the game. Pure hype pushes this guy into the runner-up position.
1. Wrecking Ball
In number one is Wrecking Ball, of course! In my opinion, Hammond and his monster mech are the greatest thing to happen to Overwatch since it was released. He is bonkers, bizarre and utterly brutal in his playstyle. He completely changes the game in how it’s played and shows how wacky the developers are willing to get, and I think that is amazing as we look to the future of Overwatch. Make more crazy characters, Blizzard!
